Ask De’Wayne about SCSU

How did you decide to become a student at South Carolina State University?

I always knew that after graduating high school that the military would not be one of my options and coming from the small city of Georgetown, SC, there aren’t any beneficial job opportunities at your disposal. I then decided to pursue my career in music by enrolling into SC State University.

What professors at South Carolina State University left the most impression upon you as a student and/or person? What did they do that continues to mean so much to you to this day?

I would say my Music Theory teacher Mr. Lawrence. He was a difficult instructor but i can say that he was one of my only instructors that made sure the student knew the material before finishing his class.

What is the story of your “experience” at South Carolina State University given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious HBCU?

My experience at SCSU was a learning process. I went into college with a very different mentality about life than i have today. With every situation i had to encounter i gained knowledge which helped me in the long run.

Where are the spots to go to if you wanted to cuddle with your boy or girlfriend?

My house or hers.

What were the best restaurants on and near campus? Which dishes did you enjoy the most?

Mr. Hibachi’s is a Japanese restaurant about 5 minutes away from campus. Everyone loves their rice bowls. My favorite dish is the Teriyaki chicken dinner.

What were the chants heard most often at the sporting events?

Who was your College crush?

“Destiny” she was also a “Champagne Dancer”

How did you overcome your nervousness about going to college?

I just went into it. It was something i had to do.

What was your major? and Why did you choose it?

I majored in Music Industry. Music is all i have ever wanted to do. I wasn’t quite sure at the moment exactly what i wanted to do in the music industry but i knew i wanted to be somewhere in it.

When and how did you discover your passion in life?

I realized my passion when i was about to graduate from high school. After evaluating my life and my future I decided to take the necessary steps to further my skills in music.

Whats your take on life (in the philosophical sense)?

I am a positive person. I feel that you become what you surround yourself with, which is why I try to associate myself with goal oriented people. I also believe that as a person you should do whatever feels right to you because you are the one that has to walk down the path you choose.

If you could only speak two sentences to the youth coming after you what would you say?

Make good grades in high school so you can get scholarships. Growing up, I didn’t have older people encouraging me to apply myself so that I may benefit in the long run so I try to pass as much knowledge as I can whenever I speak to the youth.
