Born and raised in the beautiful city of Miami, Florida, producer, songwriter, musician (Violinist , Drummer & Piano) and commercial model Daisy Gates shares with us and moreso, YOU her proud and prosperous HBCU Experience at Florida Memorial University.
I appreciate the heart of the professors and how they would always make time inside their ever so busy schedule to talk to them and elaborate on things I really needed help with.
My HBCU experience was so crazy the first year. I was a little shy and didn’t want to express my vocal skills due to so many awesome singers!
I remember going in the recording studio with the Ambassador Chorale and we had to record all 10 songs for our Florida Memorial CD it was fun and very tiring but an awesome experience.
During my years there I had the opportunity to travel to different cities locally as well as to other states.
My most exciting experience with Florida Memorial was singing in the Pop Ensemble and having the opportunity to perform alongside with the late Lou Rawls at a big event. There was a 2003 Ambassador Chorale tour and It was a blast.
We went to the historical grounds where Florida Memorial was located back in 1918 in St. Augustine, Fl. we traveled the east coast all the way to New York where we were featured on his show!
There were many great experiences but the most challenging thing of course were some of my classes were very difficult at times and I overcame them by studying hard, getting help from professors, working together in groups and praying for help.
“My mother also gave a recount of her time at VSU and how wonderful it was. A few days later, I received a large envelope in the mail. I had been accepted to the nation’s first public HBCU and couldn’t have been more proud to attend.”
I decided to become a student at Bethune Cookman University after recieving a band scholarship to become apart of the Marching wildcats. without my scholarship I probably would not be apart of something as great as this legacy.
“I decided to come to Winston Salem State University initially because they awarded me with all the financial aid i needed and also they actually cared about the voice of freshmen.”
“My major is Psychology with a minor in African American Studies. I’ve always been a great listener and advice giver according to my friends and family.”
“The night President Barack Obama was elected will forever remain etched in my heart and being, as I felt proud to be a part of my generation, of this country, of my Black race, of history, and to be a proud Claflinite.”
