I used to look forward to watching the UNCF Fundraiser program growing up & I was excited to see this and was motivated since then.

How did you decide to become a student at Florida Memorial University?

Felt Like Home; It was my home away from home like literally in my backyard.

Which professors at left the most impression upon your academic and personal life? What did they do that continues to mean so much to you to this day?

Dr. Melvin White, Professor Nicole Yarling, Dr. Pinkston, Dr. Symonette, Dr. Yaklich so many to name but these are the few.

Dr. Jerome Symonette

I appreciate the heart of the professors and how they would always make time inside their ever so busy schedule to talk to them and elaborate on things I really needed help with.

What is the story of your “HBCU experience” at Florida Memorial University?

My HBCU experience was so crazy the first year. I was a little shy and didn’t want to express my vocal skills due to so many awesome singers!

I remember going in the recording studio with the Ambassador Chorale and we had to record all 10 songs for our Florida Memorial CD it was fun and very tiring but an awesome experience.

During my years there I had the opportunity to travel to different cities locally as well as to other states.

My most exciting experience with Florida Memorial was singing in the Pop Ensemble and having the opportunity to perform alongside with the late Lou Rawls at a big event. There was a 2003 Ambassador Chorale tour and It was a blast.

We went to the historical grounds where Florida Memorial was located back in 1918 in St. Augustine, Fl. we traveled the east coast all the way to New York where we were featured on his show!

I also had the honor to play my first violin solo “Lift Every Voice & Sing” (FMC was the home of the National Negro Anthem) at a basketball game in 2006.

There were many great experiences but the most challenging thing of course were some of my classes were very difficult at times and I overcame them by studying hard, getting help from professors, working together in groups and praying for help.

I had my days when college was taking a toll on me at times but my hard work paid off during the years, being placed on the Dean’s list, featured in the 2003 Who’s Who among students in American Universities & Colleges and graduated Cum Laude!
