Your HBCU?
Grambling State University

Graduation Year?
2011

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?

I am from a small town located in central Louisiana, Ferriday. Growing up I was very active in high school from the student government association, numerous clubs and organizations and the marching band.

Ferriday High School Marching band was the epitome of the World Fame Tiger Marching Band of Grambling State University.

When you see our black and gold you would think here come the baby World Fame. It was my high school director, Mr. Carl Dangerfield (RIP) who introduced me to the HBCU arena by inviting me to homecomings, events, high school band camps. Hope I made him proud.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?

I simply chose an HBCU over a PWI because of the valuable experiences, lessons, and true essence of a family I received just as a high school student during campus visits and stays.

I visited almost 8 HBCUs my junior and senior years of high school and I can say I felt like I knew everyone like friends and family. The welcoming and hospitality was like no other. I knew that my choice of college would be an HBCU.

Major? Why did you choose it?

In undergraduate, my major was political science (pre-law) in which my life long goal is to become a lawyer.

My hometown was in desperate need of strong black male lawyers and I wanted to be one of those in the area.

After receiving my undergraduate degree I had a change of heart as I entered into a student-centered major of Developmental Education (Student Affairs).

During my undergraduate years, I worked within the Department of Residential Life where I was challenged at providing several students a safe living and learning enviorment but overall enjoyable experience. I developed a sense of working for the students which opened my eyes to the Student Affairs sector even more.

Although this has grown as a passion, I will return back to the hallways of a law school to fulfill my dream of becoming a lawyer.

What is the story of your “experience” at Grambling State University given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?

My experience at THEE Grambling State University is remarkable. My time at Grambling State University has shaped my ability to conquer the world on many levels.

Not only has it prepared me but Grambling has provided me the opportunity to freely be me and express my inner motives both mentally and physically.

I was very active on campus which opened up avenues of passion created to continue the great deed of legacy of my illustrious university, Grambling State Univeristy.

“First time” experiences at your HBCU?

I can describe my first time as Gramfam! In this sense I was apart of a family that introduced me to many opportunities and pulled the inner abilities out of me. Coming in as a first year band student I gained several new brother and sisters that to this day, I can call upon.

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?

Although all my professors played an intrinsic role in my life, there’s this one teacher since my arrival to date that has seen me grow and ensure through sometimes a simple smile that no matter the obstacles ahead, I can achieve.

Mrs. Wiley, my first year experience teacher was my leading force of motivation. She took out the time to not only teach my about the great history of Grambling State University but she opened her arms up and embraced me as mother away from home.
