DeAngelo Scurry, Central State University- c/o 2013, Mass Communications
Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I was born and raised in Detroit, MI.
After my freshman year of college, my family moved all the way south to Atlanta, GA. My freshman year of high school was when the movie “Drumline” was released, and instantly I had joined my high school marching band. My band directors where from Southern University and Jackson State University and they always spoke so high of not just their institutions, but all HBCUs

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I chose an HBCU over a pwi more so because of the culture aspect. There’s so much history behind us as black that isn’t being taught in a pwi. Also being at a HBCU, the staff is more hands on which is something that I really do appreciate.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
We broke apart from our mother school, Wilberforce University, in 1950 and gained our accreditation in 1951. Were one of the two HBCUs in Ohio, and the only public.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Best restaurants on/near campus? Best dishes?
The best place to go to on campus to eat is the Grill 155; its a burger style eatery. The off campus hot spot would be Buffalo Wild Wings.
I met my college crush during Pirate Week (Freshman Week). It was weird at first because he seemed to be everything that I was looking for. Going into our junior year, him and I are still happily together. Only difficult thing about dating in college is coming across someone who’s 12 hrs away.
