Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*

I was born in Rochester, NY, but raised in Jacksonville, Florida. I had never heard of an HBCU until it was time for me to start thinking about where I wanted to go to school. My Uncle went to Southern and he would always talk about them and encouraged me to look into one. So I did. Best decision ever!

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*

I didn’t want to just be a number like you are in most big name PWI’s. I wanted my professors to know my name, and whenever I need to go to office hours, I want to speak with the actual Professor. The culture that lives at HBCU’s really prepares you for the real world.

What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*

FAMU has really strong Healthcare programs, from Pharmacy, Nursing, PT/OT. Taking classes and seeing all of these future black doctors and healthcare professionals is really amazing.

One day we will be out diversifying the health care industry as well as making an impact on our own communities.

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*

Oh my goodness there’s so many ! Set Friday ! Becoming a member of the number one Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. , Spring Break in Panama City Beach .. I could go on forever !

5

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*

Dr. Guthrie! He was the toughest teacher when I went back to get my Nursing degree. I ended up being assigned to his clinical group one semester.

I was so upset because we had to do THE most and he graded our care plans so hard. Fast forward to now, a lot of the “extra” things he had us do before clinical I incorporate in my nursing practice now.
