Ashley Sidney, Grambling State University- c/o 2016, Leisure Studies
Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m from Houston, Tx. I have a friend who was always talking about HBCU bands, more so Prairie View and that kind of got me into it. I asked him a few questions and I informed myself on the rest.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I chose to attend an HBCU over a PWI because, majority of my grade school years, there was a mixture of black, mostly hispanics and other races, and I wanted to know what it was like being at a school with people the same race as me all challenging ourselves for a higher education. Also there are life changing opportunities at HBCU’s that wouldn’t be available to us at a PWI.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Well I don’t have much of a story right now, just a few paragraphs. I’m still at the beginning of my story, but as I go into my sophomore year there will be much more to discuss on my experience. So far my experience has been great. I’m glad to say that Grambling will soon be my alma mater.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
Well, I have a few first time experiences. My first college football game against Bethune Cookman in fall 2015. It was very exciting, the crowd, the band, the dancers. It was everything I expected and some. My first Erykah Badu concert was during Homecoming week and it was phenomenal.
And Bayou Classic, one of the best rivalry games in the south was the best way to end the season with no loss in our conference. (Also my first time being in New Orleans.)

Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Professors that have impacted my life in and out of the classroom are Mr. Seals and Mrs. Calvin. If I need any help whether it’s with a recommendation or some help understanding an assignment,
Mr. Seals will explain it thoroughly. Mrs. Calvin is more of making sure I’m focused and to strive for better.
Questions about being a Leisure Studies Major? Or attending Grambling State? Respectfully ask Ashley!
