Alexis Jay, Paine College- c/o 2018, Sociology

Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I am originally from Philadelphia, Pa. The person who introduced me to HBCUs was my sister who happened to be a graduate of Miles College.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I decided to choose an HBCU over a pwi due to the fact, that to me there is no better feeling than being a part of History and being able to get an education from the institution that my ancestors fought for.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Paine College, is truly the gateway to the world. My experience at Paine College has been a blessing. There are so many lessons that Paine has taught me that i will take on with me for the rest of my life.
The Faculty and staff have played a major role in my years there and will always be considered Family. From me first coming into Paine College in 2012, i was very shy. But through the journey i was able to get out of my comfort zone, be more active on campus and Blossom into the strong woman that i am, Thanks to my Beloved institution.

"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
The Professor that has been there for me and Challenged me the most would have to be none other than Dean Woodson.
He has impacted my life in so many ways. From, not only being the Dean but also being my Director of The Paine College Concert Choir, he has always taught me to Believe that i am capable to achieve the unthinkable and let nothing or no one stop me from reaching the level of success i want to acquire.
