Dre’Quan Cooley, Jackson State University- c/o 2016, Business Marketing
Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m from Laurel Mississippi. I was researching for affordable colleges in my state and ran across Jackson State University still not knowing what an HBCU was.

Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
Once I went on a tour of Jackson State I did not want to visit any other college due to the fun filled environment as well as the home feeling of the campus. That’s one of the main reasons why I would choose an HBCU OVER a PWI.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
Being at an HBCU, especially Jackson State University teaches a person how to become socially aware of the things happening in our communities and in the world that we live in. Coming into Jackson State ready to further my education, that was the only thing on my mind.
Later I found out that it is about academics as well as networking and stepping out of my comfort zone and doing things you may have never done before. It helps build a person for the real world especially when you want to become successful in your craft basically what you major in and whatever you may want to do in your life, not only career wise but these things can help a person out in everyday situations.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first experience was really just introducing myself to others not really knowing how to do so, but I came around it took quite a while but I came out of my shell. Which leads to stepping out of your comfort zone which I believe is a huge benefactor to all incoming freshmen as well as college students who haven’t had the courage to step up and speak or do things in a manner that they think should be said or done.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
One of the most recent professors I have to say that has impacted my life would be Dr. Crump he has really just shown me that as a student I have more potential that I have given myself to become that boss I plan to be in the near future.
