Phyllis Epps, Wilberforce University- c/o 1983, Business Marketing
Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
Washington, DC.
High School Counselor.
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I wanted to go to a PWI, but after I heard about the Co-op Program at Wilberforce and I received money to attend Wilberforce I knew that it was the school for me.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
The teachers were very dedicated and made sure that you received a good education.
I have met some life long friends while attending Wilberforce. I pledged Delta Sigma in 1979 and I will celebrate being a Delta for 40 years next year. I feel that I can compete with anyone and I have done well in my line of work as a Contract Specialist with the Federal Government and in the private sector.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
Meeting people from all over the country and seeing how we dance in various cities and towns.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Richard Deering impacted me at Wilberforce because his teachings have helped me a lot in my professional career. Dr. Baranda taught philosophy, it was very interesting learning and she told some wonderful stories about her family. I also learned about a lot of different cultures and people.
