Courtney Buckhanon, Oakwood University- c/o 2016, Mass Communications
Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m a southern belle from Georgia! My father introduced me! He attended FAMU and pledged Omega Psi Phi during his time there. I grew up around he, his frat brothers and sisters.
Professor Patti Conwell of Oakwood University
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
I went to predominately white school k-12. I wanted to experience being around people who looked like me, people who understood that they were beautiful because they were black, not in-spite of their blackness.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
My HBCU experience has been full of pride! Full of growth! Learning why black is beautiful, learning about the greatness that black men possess, learning about my potential and how to tap into it and manifest it in a world that wasn’t made for me to succeed in.
“Beauty is whatever gives joy.,,, “|
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
Off the top of my head the best first time experience I’ve had at my HBCU is the experience of school spirit. It’s rich, it’s budding, it’s contagious! I really can’t describe it. It was something like I’d never experienced.
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
