Lauren Jackson, Howard University- c/o 2016, Mass Communications
Where are you from? Who introduced you to HBCUs?*
I’m a Long Island native. Almost everyone in my family graduated from a HBCU.
Associate Professor, Dr. Overtta Harris of Howard University
Why did you choose an HBCU over a pwi?*
Initially, I attended Long Island university for undergrad and had a diverse experience. Deep down I always wanted to attend Howard. An opportunity presented itself when I was accepted into the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program.
What is the story of your "experience" at Your HBCU given its heralded status as a stellar and prestigious institution?*
I went from being an immature young lady who was aware of my culture to being an educated woman with a greater understanding of where my ancestors came from. It seemed as though learning about Gullah culture was a part of the Communication Sciences and Disorders program.
"First time" experiences at your HBCU?*
My first “Fish Fry” was at Howard. Loved it!
Who are the professors that have impacted your life in and out of the classroom? How did they do that?*
Dr. Ovetta Harris was a big influence on my academic success. She encouraged me in my studies and was like a mother to me.
